Pythagoras' theorem question?

Nick flew 473 km north-east and then 985 km west. How far is he from his starting point? I know I'm meant to use Pythagoras' theorem, but how do I figure out where the right angle is?

    Nick flew 473 km north-east and then 985 km west. How far is he from his starting point? (985 - x)/473 = sin 45 985 - x = 473 sin 45 x = 985 - 473 sin 45 x = 650.538492498763020958400616724406404418... km

Find the resultant. North East to Wast will be 90+45=135. This will be angle between the two. The resultant r will be r² = 473² + 985² + 473*985* cos 135=864509.4 r=929.8km

    Nick flew 473 km north-east and then 985 km west. How far is he from his starting point? (985 - x)^2 + y^2 = 473^2 d^2 = x^2 + y^2 d = 512 km
