Can someone be a teacher while getting a teaching certificate with a BA in liberal arts instead of an BA in n Education?

There is alternative certification where you can get certified to teach in a subject area that is related to your degree. But most of the time you still have to go back and take classes anyway, so why not get what you need right away?
