Is the mind a component of matter or is the mind independent of matter?

In my experience the mind pretty much goes away when we anesthetize the brain. Seems to me that makes it an emergent function of the grey matter, and not an independent agent. . .

That is a big debate in philosophy. Dualism says mind is independent of matter. Materialism says mind is an emergent property of the brain. No one knows which is right.

The mind cannot exist without matter... but, matter can exist without a mind. (Most politicians are proof of this).

BOTH. Without the electrical signals in your nervous system and brain you are DEAD. Without matter there are no nerves or or neurons and no electrical signals. Even when i was in a medically induced coma for 6 weeks i was NOT brain dead.
