What are these [ ]?

what do these mean [this] they're like brackets but I don't know why I keep seeing them in articles as they don't seem to be used inn the same way as brackets. I've tried a few google searches and cant seem to find an answer

Brackets without content can be used to indicate that something has been omitted from the quoted material. Hopefully something unimportant.

[] are usually used to indicate comments made by the editor of the work.
