Why is the South so much better than the rest of the US especially the Northeast and California?

Depends on your definition of "better". The South of the US is hotter, the people less educated, the economy less prosperous. But the food is good.

Probably because of the horrible heat and humidity, the hurricanes, the mosquitoes, the artery-clogging food, and all those other fine amenities.
