    y^2 - x^2 = 176 y - x = 8 y^2 - [ y - 8 ]^2 = 176 y^2 - [ y^2 - 16y + 64 ] = 176 16y = 240 y = 15 , x = 7

    The differenc between the square of two numbers is 176. The difference between the two numbers is 8. x is the smaller number and y is the other number. y^2 - x^2 = 176 y - x = 8 8(x + y) = 176 x + y = 22 x = 7, y = 15

    The numbers are x = 7 and y = 15 Check: 15^2 -7^2 = 176 Check: 15 -7 = 8

    y^2 - x^2 = 176 Difference of squares can be written as (y+x)(y-x) = 176 But we know y-x = 8 (y+x)*8 = 176 y+x = 22 Use y-x = 8 again y = x+8 x+8 + x = 22 x = (22-8)/2 = 7 y = 7+8 = 15
