It didn't rise in the west. When the moon is just past new and is a very thin crescent, it rose just after the sun did that morning but its not visible until the sun sets that night, so it suddenly appears visible in the west just after sunset.

No, it did NOT rise in the west. It cannot do that. You were simply disoriented, or you mistook setting for rising.
