Since cities are so expensive why do poor people keep moving to them?

Because they have anonimosity in cities and can live their lives without everyone giving them dirty looks.

The landlords push them off the land to make way for sheep pasture.

Because that's where the jobs are. There's also public transportation and an infrastructure that is more amenable to those who don't own cars.

Because living by dumpsterdiving is a lot easier and richer than living off the land. Things like soup-kitchens usually are city-based as well Begging (do you call it pan-handling?) is more lucrative in the city too
