"If a/b is the fraction of the whole that satisfies some property, then 1-(a/b) is the fraction of the whole that does not satisfy it." So does that mean, in a pie, a/b is the slice, and 1-(a/b) is the rest of the pie that isn't the slice?

    yes, that is correct

    That is correct. Another way to say it is: (b - a)/b For example if you have eaten 3/8 of a pizza, what remains is 5/8 of a pizza. 1 - 3/8 = 8/8 - 3/8 = 5/8 Or: (8 - 3)/8 = 5/8

A long-winded way to say that if take 1/10 of the whole (for example), then the part you didn't take is 9/10. 9/10 = 1 - 1/10

That's one way to visualize it, yes.
