Are South Americans, Mexicans, and Canadians considered "Americans" as well? Or is that just the US?

Since North AMERICA consists of Canada, the U.S, and Mexico, are Mexicans and Canadians considered American as well? Why can the U.S. only call itself Americans? What about South AMERICA? Are those citizens considered American?

    For many, both North and South America are known as the Americas and, accordingly, anyone within that region is actually an American.

    It's unclear in English In Esperanto, all of them are "amerikanoj", but those in the US specifically are called "usonanoj"
