    The best is 2 x 4 so the perimeter is 2(2+4) = 12 other possibilities are 1x8 which has a perimeter of 2(1+9) = 18

    Considering rectangles because 8 factors: The area is 8 units. As it is made of unit squares its width and length are integers. Width x length = 8. What are integer factor pairs making 8? 1 x 8 2 x 4 The perimeter of a rectangle with length L and width W is 2(L+W). This counts all 4 sides. 1 x 8 has a perimeter = 2*9 = 18 2 x 4 has a perimeter = 2*6 = 12 Answer is a 2 x 4 (or 4 x 2) rectangle.

12 is the minimum perimeter. This could be a 4 by 2 rectangle or it could be a 3 by 3 square with one corner missing.
