Clearly not, for the world hasn't ended and herpes has been around before we were a species. Are you to be branded with The Scarlett H? Many, many people also have herpes. There are 3 million new cases per year in the United States alone. Your pool just went from the grains of sand on the beaches in the world to the grains of sand on the beaches in the South Pacific.

No, many people have it. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about one out of six people in the United States aged 14 to 49 have genital herpes caused by the HSV-2 infection (the herpes simplex virus often responsible for genital herpes). You need to use a condom to prevent spreading it to your partners who don't have it. You also need to tell your partners you have herpes BEFORE you have sex with them. If they don't want to have sex with you, it's too bad but you can find someone else.

You will as you won’t have a breakout all the time. However, you need to be vigilant with a condom, avoid sex when you’re having a breakout and always tell your partner you have this health issue as it isn’t fair to keep it from them. Some people will mind and some will not. It’s very important as it can impact a child’s life if born to a mother with a breakout as it can spread and herpes to infants is very dangerous.

No, it's not the end of the world. You do need to be vigilant about taking medication that can prevent break-outs, and you have to be upfront and honest that you have it with any potential sex partner. Condoms aren't very useful with preventing herpes transmission, because they don't cover the groin area (herpes spreads through skin to skin contact, not through bodily fluids) but you should use them anyway, because they do help prevent the transmission of other STDs. Your doctor should be able to provide you with full information about what to do and what not to do. You should also look at information provided by various organizations about how to care for yourself and protect others. See below for a start. Lots of people have herpes. One person I know found that dating sites where she could be upfront about it online were helpful. She met potential partners who also had herpes. Good luck.
