Explain why it takes a large force of gravity to trigger nuclear fusion of hydrogen into helium in a protostar.?

I would appreciate some help on this question. I can't seem to understand the answers that was given to me in my article. if someone could maybe explain it better that would be great. thank you.

You need to have MeV energy protons. The velocity of such protons will be 10^9 cm/s or 10^4 km/s. Treat this as the escape velocity and the mass and radius.you see that in nature Sun and stars are natural fusion reactors because of there masses.
