There are always other ways to convey a particular idea, but as it stands, your sentence is grammatically correct. The comma is necessary, and there is nothing wrong with 'sheer' silence.

if you need an adjective for silence, use something more powerful...or let silence speak for itself.

It is grammatically correct, but it does not feel quite natural to me, as a middle-class southern Briton. Try: "There was a long silence, more than ten minutes, during which no one dare to make a sound".

For about ten minutes, no one had dared to break the total silence in the room. (More naturally phrased)
