Why do I suddenly get paranoid over a loved ones death?

For example, fireworks were going off and my brother ran outside to see them and I suddenly had a flash of him going over the edge of the balcony and this guy wrenching feeling flooded my entire body. This happens often, similar scenarios, and same dreaded paranoia.
