How does someone die when they overdose? is it painful? peaceful?

I do not know what drug..but probably one of the big ones. My cousin died this weekend from an overdose. And i was wondering if he felt any pain. How does it happen? was he high and drifted off into a sleep, was it a wrong spot injection...too much or what
