Why do liberals consider the 2000, 2004, and 2016 elections controversial of the 21st century but not 2008 or 2012?

Answer: Because a Republican won in 2000, 2004, and 2016. If a Republican wins, it's automatically controversial.

    Because in 2000 there were shenanigans in Florida and in 2016 the Russians worked with the Republicans to corrupt our demoratic system. Not sure what you're referring to in 2004.
