Can you be convicted if you have a mental illness?

What if you have schizophrenia and hear voices telling you to hurt someone and you do it. I know this is bad but surely it’s not fair convicting them?

You can plead insanity.

Sure it is. They'll put you somewhere so you can't do it again. You can't go around hurting people.

Far better than letting them roam around killing people. He SHOULD/MUST be locked up.
