Neanderthals - as a separate distinct species - went extinct about 40,000 years ago. Different skeletons will of course have lived at different times, but all are older than that. And yes, when the skeletons were alive they had flesh on them.

Well, I've got to say, I've never met a living skeleton.

We still find their bones . There might be a few Abominable Snow men alive , though .
