Are Sharks attracted to blood, and could they smell it miles away?

I was wandering because I heard not too long ago there was a spotting of a few Great White Sharks less than a mile away from the coast of the beach I go to. If I were to bleed at the slightest or get a small cut would it be dangerous to go in the Ocean?.
