    A big chunk of Styrofoam won't sink, whereas a wadded chunk of fabric will (briefly after it fills with water) and a rock will immediately.

    If it is denser than the fluid, it sinks. If it is less dense, it floats. The force that keeps it up is called "buoyancy" and is equal to the weight of the liquid displaced.
