How would 1/2 be written in base 5?

1/2 is the sum of the geometric progression 2/5^1 + 2/5^2 + 2/5^3 + 2/5^4 + ... That tells you the answer. Of course if you do not like infinitely long repeating "base 5 imals" you could just write 1/2.

Just make long division ...__0.222... 2 /10 ......4 -------- ......10 ........4 ---------- ........1 etc.

0.2222222.... which makes sense. Multiply it by 2 and we get: 0.444444444......., which in base-5 would really be 1, much in the same way that 0.99999999.... in base-10 is 1.
