You can make your mind up in one day but usually withdrawal takes a weeks depending on the addiction. My opioid addiction takes 2-3 months to completely withdraw.

Sure, there was a story of a guy with Alzheimer's who smoked his whole life who just one day forgot that he was a smoker and stopped. Addictions are mostly habits, and habits are specific neural linkages. Those links can be disrupted in different ways.

Yes. I was bulimic for 12 years and one day, gone. Then I was alcoholic for 8 and one day, gone. But, both cases involved being severely fed up for years over the situation and failed attempts to stop. Really coming to a point of done with it.
