why not a "Gold spoon or platter"?

    Because spoons and platters are virtually never made of gold. Silver is good enough for all but the most extravagant rich people. And it’s “in one’s mouth,” not “on one’s mouth.”

    traditionally, goldsmiths make jewellery, silversmiths make utensils

    It has been a tradition in many countries for wealthy godparents to give a silver spoon to their godchildren at christening ceremonies. A golden spoon would be too soft, thus wouldn't be practical.

    Silver must have been more valuable than gold at the time the phrase was made. Plus, many wealthy folks had silver for their ware. My grandparents bought their silverware from a jewler. That’s my guess

    Because cutlery and platter trays are silver in colour and are sometimes actually made of silver.
