Can you explain factoring in algebra?

6 answers

I am finishing an exam study guide in my algebra class and I forgot how factoring works. I’ve looked online and everything seems to confuse me. One question I have is x squared + 16x +48 could somebody please explain how to do this?

    Ans. (x+12)(x+4) Explanation: x^2+16x+48 = x^2+4x+12x+48 = x(x+4)+12(x+4) = (x+4)(x+12)

    x ² + 16x + 48 = ( x + 12 ) ( x + 4 )

    Multiply x² and 48 to get 48x² Find factors of 48 that add up to 16. 12x * 4x = 48x² and 12x + 4x = 16x. Now, enter the problem as x² + 12x + 4x + 48 = 0 Simplify this x(x+12) + 4(x + 12) = 0 (x+12)(x+4) = 0 x may be -12 or x may be -4

    Factors of x^2 are obviously x & x Factors of 48 are 4 & 12, 6 & 8, 3 & 16 etc We need to make 16 using these factors so try 4 & 12 (x+4)(x+12) ✓

    x^2 + 16x + 48 = x^2 + 12x + 4x + 48 = x(x + 12) + 4(x + 12) = (x + 12)(x + 4)

    Factorise x^2 + 16x +48 = (x+a)(x+b) with ab=48 and a+b=16 , find a,b
