Funny, it's usually the other way around. I like grackles so just give them more and they will leave some for the squirrels. Probably, its better to just hand feed the squirrels. They learn real quickly and will take more than they can eat for later.

Difficult to solve. Try putting it somewhere unexposed to the sky, while using those bird needles on top and almost all the way around the feeder. Birds wont be able to land on it, but squirrels can still navigate around.

I sit on the porch and feed the squirrels directly. A few magpies I toss seed for, everybody is happy. Sometimes I just feed squirrels:

Put out food for bears and coyotes instead.
