    You have two variables and two equations. a + b = 24 Get on variable in terms of the other: -----> b = 24 - a Substitute that into the other equation and solve for the single variable. 2a = b - 3 = 24 - a - 3 -----> 3a = 21 OR a = 7 and b = 24 - 7 = 17

    2(24-b) = b-3 51 = 3b Numbers are 7 & 17

    x + y = 24 x = 2y + 3 Solve the system of equations. 2y + 3 + y = 24 3y = 21 y = 7 x = 2(7) + 3 = 17
