In engineering mathematics, it could indicate the Laplace transform if the typeface doesn't have the correct curly capital L.

It always was, and still is the symbol of the British Pound Sterling (Money). Britain did not join in the Euro ( € ) lunacy.

Currency unit....British Pound. This symbol does not use in mathematic formula. Common use in old day commercial paper until Pound was not more existed.
