Can the standard calculators that students use in American high schools solve for missing variables? If a student were to type in something such as 10*180=12*x would it tell them what "x" is equal to?

No. Stand alone calculators do calculations, not solving equations. If you want to solve equations you use mathematical programs on a computer, or use something like the online website Wolfram Alpha
