I am doing a little project for which I need to know some of the reasons as to why the universe is expanding. Thanks

One of the latest theory is that space is not expanding but rather its the Galaxies that are expanding as they are experiencing mass changes.

Nothing is holding the universe in one spot. Much like if you pour water on a flat surface it has no reason not to expand.
