Why do so many people think that Africa is one singular country?

Admittedly, when I was a young child I assumed that Africa was just one country, but kids think a lot of weird stuff. What I am asking is, why did I, and so many other people believe/believed that Africa is one country?

Africa is a continent, made up of over 50 individual countries. Sheesh, I learned that in the 5th grade. Some of those countries came along after that.
