What does 'self-exiled' mean?

In the context of an artist who was 'so busy creating his own universe that he was self-exiled.'? Does it mean that he shut himself away from others, or....?

It's an oxymoron, sort of like the idea of a president "pardoning himself." To exile is to cast someone out, and you can't cast yourself out. It's just a wrong choice of words.
