    Those doctors never tried to discourage me from becoming a doctor, even though it was an era that breathed, "If woman: be a nurse." Breathed as in give utterance or whisper.

    REmove the first comma, it is not needed. era that breathed - an era where there was no choice for women in geeneral, in the medical field other than a nursing occupation. The era, or males of the era, would not allow women to become doctors.
