Writing a story,can someone give me some words that describe the smell of a basement in a castle.?

in this part of my story a man is trying to recuse his friend who is chained in a "historical" castle, and I was trying to find words one would use to describe the smell like something to go with damp. any help.

Musty Now that I have looked at other answers so far, I do not disagree with any of them. Indeed "dank" is probably better than "musty" because "dank" carries that idea of moisture.
