What would happen if a nuclear power plant explodes in a small town?

7 answers

I live in a small town and they are putting in a nuclear power plant. My imagination tends to run wild so I was wondering what would happen if it explodes. Will it cause radioactive problems, or will it not cause any problem?

It's not likely to explode, and "small town" is irrelevant. How far will radiation go? infinitely far, but unstable atoms (the radiation is released when they fall apart) travel as far as wind and water take them

Don't worry, If it "Explodes" you wont know anything about it.

It won't happen ....feel safe at all ...Chernobyl disaster was due to the criminal behaviour of someone who was fully incompetent and put in command for political ties

It'll kill everything around for miles. Depending on the plant and the explosion... could be for lots of miles. And for lots of years as well.

Aside from Chernobyl, there have been two other famous nuclear plant accidents: Fukushima and Three Mile Island. Read about them.

if the explosion is big enough and you are close enough, you die. Your question is as vague as asking "what happens if I'm in a car and it has an accident?" From nothing to life time crippling injuries to death.

I'm not sure. Likely it will be mistaken for a nuclear strike and cause a world war.
