    The reason for that usage is lost to time. No one actually knows. I like the trolley idea best (dolly is derived from trolley, a variant on trolley), but there is no real reason to believe it. It simply seems an easy thing to happen.

    A search for the etymology of the word dolly reveals that nobody actually knows its true origin as the name of a small flat cart used to move heavy objects. .

    Technically a dolly is a four wheeled platform. I think calling a hand truck a dolly is a misnomer.
