Was there a single 20th century election where the result is where the loser lost the electoral vote but won the popular vote?

    yes. I don't know which one but I remember one in the history book.

    Yup, Al Gore and George Bush. Maybe others too. The electoral college is there to prevent a few huge population states from taking over the potus elections. It has always elected potus. It is not a new thing.

    The runner-up has become President 5 times: John Quincy Adams in 1824, Rutherford Hayes in 1876, Benjamin Harrison in 1888, George W. Bush in 2000 and Donald Trump in 2016. Whether Bush was in the 20th or 21st century is a matter of semantics.
