What's the difference between a snake, a serpent and an asp?

Serpent is another name for any snake, Asp is a species specific type of venomous snake. I have heard the name serpent in referencing eels, so a little more ambiguous.

The terms snake and serpent may refer to any snake although serpent is usually used to refer to large ones. Asp refers to a venomous snake found in Europe.
