What does "being offended on someone else's behalf" exactly mean?

    For example, if somebody calls your friend 'fatty', you might feel offended FOR her, even though the insult was not directed at you.

    That you want to be offended at something that wasn't directed towards you, that would be someone that wants attention but they didn't actually get the insult hurled at them
