The baby starts its existence when a sperm fertilises an egg, thus both are essential for the start of a baby. Before that fertilisation neither a sperm nor an egg is a baby.

The egg makes the whole baby with a tiny contribution of junk DNA, X-DNA (and, if male, Y-DNA) from the dad. Thus, even males have MtDNA from the mom, due to the fact that their bodies were made from the egg.

Neither. The sperm and the egg both only have half of what is needed to 'create a baby's. They have to 'come together' before a baby can start to develope. However .. It is the man's sperm that 'decides' if the baby will be male or female.
