Which is the correct spelling, "side effect" or “side-effect”?

May I know which spelling is more accurate, the one with hyphened or the one not hyphened? Which spelling do most people use?

    It's not necessary to use a hyphen, but if you're writing for people for whom English is not their first language, it's often helpful to insert one, and certainly not 'wrong'.

    In Britain in over 60 years I think I have only ever seen "side effect". In other parts of the world-wide English-speaking world things may be different.
