There are a lot of English dialects around the world, from Britain to Boston to the Caribbean and elsewhere, in which people tend to not pronounce the "r" after a vowel. Haven't you ever heard somebody from Maine talking about "clam chowdah"? :)

The word would still be written with the "r" even if people don't pronounce it.
