If he has a net worth of $5MM then it seems rude to snub your child of $5k for the purpose of an education. Ultimately, it's not your money and you are not entitled to it but I would take it as a hint that your father does not hold you in high regard.

That amount of money seems sufficient to help a family member out with college money. If he also has huge debts, or there are other valid reasons for his complaints, he might not actually be a jerk. Not enough info to make a final judgement here.
