    If you do, it's patriarchy. If you don't, it's patriarchy. Give her the seat; she'll hate you either way. Just remember this: You didn't give her the seat because she's a lady; you gave her the seat because YOU are a gentleman.

    I am a guy in general it is considered an etiquette and it reflect the manner of the person - ( being a gentleman ) to give your seat to a woman , child or elderly person

    Who said you should? Offer up your seat if you want to, keep it if you'd rather stay sitting. I have a feeling most people who bring up this question don't even use public transport. I've never seen anyone make an issue out of this on a bus/train.

    Ah, just tell them you have a bad ankle, and all should be fine from there.
