Why does Japan have so many big earthquakes and California never has any big earthquakes?

    Cali does have big ones to... Japan just happens to be ISLANDS made by them so they get more more often then California does.

    California does have big ones. The one in San Fran in the early 1900s was pretty big, and the 6.7 one at Northridge in 1994 was pretty big too. There was also a 1989 centered in the Santa Cruz Mountains, magnitude 6.9.

    Of course California has big earthquakes. Both Japan and California are along the major fault lines that surround the Pacific (the Ring of Fire).

    It is stochastically lucky for Californian peoples for several years. There would be many chances for them to encounter big earthquakes.
