The sum of two numbers is 13 and the difference is 9. Find the two numbers?

Hi. I saw this question a while back and one user posted his method which was much quicker: The larger number is (13 + 9)/2 = 11 The smaller number is (13 - 9)/2 = 2 Can someone explain to me why this works? I don't understand https://imgur.com/a/nOJUsuy

x + y = 13 x - y = 9________add 2x = 22 x = 11 y = 2 Numbers are 2 and 11
