    That's not true. The air immediately over Kilauea's fissures is probably more than 100 C.

    There is, when you are standing on top of an active lava flow like in Hawaii right now. It is like living in an OVEN.

    Heat balance considerations. Energy enters, energy leaves. Lots of places on earth where temps exceed 100 C, but they aren't thin gas near the near-vacuum of space.
