Why is there 0 C (or even -40 C) air temperature on the planet earth, but there is no 100 C air temperature on the planet earth?

That's not true. The air immediately over Kilauea's fissures is probably more than 100 C.

Heat balance considerations. Energy enters, energy leaves. Lots of places on earth where temps exceed 100 C, but they aren't thin gas near the near-vacuum of space.
