Is a typical car engine strong enough to be able to handle a small rag that was lost inside it?

Strong enough doesn't matter. It's where the rag went and if it's going to plug up the oil pump.

Depends where inside it. May just catch on fire and there goes your car.

If you dropped a rag in the engine compartment, it isn't IN the engine. If you actually had the engine stripped down enough to drop a rag inside, you literally COULDN'T lose it.

No. The rag will block oil flow and the engine will not get oil where it needs it and the engine will fail. If the rag is in a cylinder then you could blow your valves in that cylinder.
