A ball is thrown in the air from the top of a building. Its height, in meters above ground, as a function of time, in seconds, is given by h(t) = −4.9t2 + 18t + 8. How long does it take to reach maximum height?

When the ball reaches its max. height, the speed there must be zero. Thus h'(t)=-9.8t+18=0 => t=-18/(-9.8)=1.8 approximately. Ans. the ball will reach its max. height in about 1.8 seconds after it was thrown.

h'(t) = -9.8t +18 = 0 for maximum t = 1.84 seconds
