Would 5 foot 8 be classed as small for a man in the UK or just on the lower end of average?

Lower end of average. 5ft10 is average height for a man these days. Under 5ft8 would be short while over 6ft is tall. For women, average height is around 5ft5 (under 5ft3 is short & over 5ft7 is tall). Hope this helps.

According to different sources, average for males is around 5' 10", so 5'8" would be below average.
